Sylvester's Science Superstars

Hi to all of my great and wonderful Science students!

The intention of this blog is to have a place to go outside of school to seek help on the science material we are studying in class. You may ask me (or anyone else in our class) a question, you may post a comment, write your thoughts, maybe even give me some directions as to how I can make this course and learning more fun for you (no, free days everyday are NOT an option). This forum is basically here for you, to help you in any area of class that I am able. All I ask is that everything that is posted within this blog is G and PG rated. If I do receive inappropriate comments, I will erase them and block you, so lets be wise about what you write. So here we go...

7th grade: We are studying genetics and heredity. Besides the generic "it's boring" what are your thoughts and comments about this unit? Do you understand the material? What is easy for you? What is not coming so easy for you? When I have more time I will find some fun websites that you can log onto, to practice Punnett squares, and play some genetics games. Fun, fun, I know, but if you are looking for some other alternatives to learning, then this will help you. Besides when you are at home playing science games all by yourself, no one from school will ever know that deep down inside of you the true Science loving person in you is emerging....ok so I had to try~!!!

8th grade: We are studying volcanoes. This will not be a very long unit, and you have a really fun activity for this unit. You get to plan, make and erupt a volcano how ever you would like. You will be working in groups on this project You will be planning and drawing the plans for your model. You will submit a rough draft to me for project approval. We will gather the materials and make volcanoes. This project will be your test grade for this unit......so get those idea juices flowing!!! Feel free to submit your thoughts about class here too. Just be sure to identify yourself as an 8th grader so I know which classes we are talking about. Just like with the 7th graders, I will find some cool volcano sites for you to log into and check out.

Let's get started with this and post some of your ideas here!!!! Be good, be safe and make good decisions!!!

i think that the punnet squares are the easiest part so far in genetics.

with the punnett squares why do you have to put capital then lower case letters. Why does dominant triats have to be first when we are writting the traits for the offsprings.

This is a good website and it helps if we can ask questions about science that what we learn and also on the weakends when we don't go to school about homework if we don't know what to do.

in our genetics class, can we get more creative with them, i had fun doing the egg project and i think we should do more stuff like that.i liked it when we made the dna labs, i find it easier to learn by the labs then the bookwork, personally, i find it harder to learn from the text, so i like talking about it or watching videos about it better.

hey mrs. sylvester i love that u came up with this idea now i can ask u for help with out any one else knowing that i suck in science!!!! i think that punnet squares are easy but when it comes to the percent i get confused..... its hard for me to understand what to do and how to acually find out what the percentage is. i've been able to kinda understand it scince you helped me at confrences. but i can still use some help.

Tessa- The reason you put the capital letter first in Punnett squares is because the is the way the scientists of long ago (Mendel) established that is the way it should be done. Scientists today follow that same protocol to keep things uniform in the world of science. Does that answer your question?

Sam-I am still living life to find out its meaning. We may not find out its meaning until death! As far as a blogger is concerned, go to blogger.com and follow the onscreen directions. It pretty much prompts you through it. If you need further help, just ask me.

Harley I will look for some vocabulary games on line for you to play. Crossword puzzles help a lot in learning the meaning of the words too.

Miranda - see me in class for help on the chapter review. My son is doing better we had a long talk with the dr. today. He apologized to me and my son for what happened, to forgive is the right thing to do, so we forgive him. He is a good surgeon, just poor when it comes to relating to people.

Katelyn- genotype is anything that has to do with letter combinations-the gene combinations for example Tt if it symbolized tallness then the Phenotype (how something looks) would be dominant. TT is also tall, tt would be recessive for short. If this doesn't make sense to you then see me in class, or check out the links I just put on the blog today.

as they day went by i thought about those genetics games, then i thought, what if you draw diffrent samples of faces lable each part diffrent like lips dominate for the male and lips ressiseve for the girl and so on for each part, then at the end, we show our's to the class or write it down and explan how our person/baby turned out like that and what caused it, like whats the genes you put for the parents, like if u made the male ears dominate, show the genotype and the phenotype, then for the next part do the same thing.

dear mrs sylvester i am at home and i am thinking about what you said about making the creature's and i was thinking that you make fun easy asnd educational labs and i think that the marble experiment was very fun and i love the fact that we gett to make so much fun stuff with genetics! genetics is the best unit we have study so far punnett sqaures are easy and so i the rest of it! the only thing i dont get is THE PART AND ROLE OF TRANSFER AND MESSEMGER RNA!!!
if you have time maybe can you explain it in class thanks but this site is very cool you always have cool sites for us but this one is the best!

Chia-I think we are going to do a modified krissy idea. I think the create a creature will be a fun and great project to show me what you know about this unit. Yes, you can ask me questions any time here. I even answered you blog comment this afternoon when you were at the computer lab...did you see it?

genetics puzzle

a purbred blue jay and a homozygous pink bird mix. the blue jay is spotted with white and the pink is spotted with pink and blue, the blue jay is BB and the pink bird is PP, if they both mixed and were codominate, what color are the birds and the spots? imagine it the other way around, if they were both heterozygous what color our there colors and spots?

someone please answer i would rather the teacher buy i understand if she cant.

In response to the Blue Jay question ---all of the offspring will be co dominant in color. They would be blue and pink blended with white spots. See Me in class and I will show you how to set up the punnett square

Gabby- Why don't you want to do the creature? If you would rather just take the written final for this unit you can, but the creature does sound more exciting
